Dealing With Those Challenging People

Webinar Abstract

4-H professionals have a high level of responsibility related to program management, marketing, program development, teaching, creative and scholarly work and service. When “challenging people” get in the midst of these important responsibilities, the 4-H professional (new or tenured) can’t produce at the level they want and are expected to be. There is often no warning. Because these situations occur in every 4-H professional’s career at some point, the 4-H professional needs to understand why these situations occur and then how to deal with them. Most people become “difficult” because of a misunderstanding, poor communication, hurt feelings or because someone has tried to take advantage of a situation. 4-H professionals can be more organized in their work (organizational systems), better deal with volunteer development and responsibilities (volunteering) and enhance their personal leadership and confidence (personal development) if they can deal with challenging people in a positive and productive way. With the diversity of the 4-H program, the 4-H professional’s personal confidence and ability to handle these situations could make their self-confidence higher and their motivation to move forward with the “challenging people” (committees, volunteers, donors, etc.) easier. It is important for the 4-H professional to not only learn skills to deal with conflict management, but practice those skills to be prepared for unsuspected situations that may arise.
